Rachel Podger (violin), Christopher Glynn (piano)
Among the many instrumental pieces that remained incomplete at Mozart's death there were four particularly beautiful fragments for violin and piano.Timothy Jones has made multiple new completions of these fragments based on Mozart's evolving style during the 1780s,exploring the open-endedness of the fragments and the different directions the music might have taken. In this recording two completions of each Sonata fragment will enable listeners to take alternative journeys through Mozart's material towards different speculative destinations.
The fruits of Timothy Jones’s engagement with Mozart’s unfinished violin sonatas make pleasant listening…if you were listening with an innocent ear you probably wouldn’t suspect that you weren’t hearing the real thing.
Jones does himself a disservice by stating that his completions 'inevitably disfigure' Mozart’s music; this is something far more positive and respectful, a kind of homage paid across the centuries by a sincere and thoughtful devotee. Podger and Glynn deserve no less credit for committing themselves so completely to bringing the fruits of Jones’s scholarship off the page.
Four of these substantial movements — we hear alternative versions of three — sound as close as possible to the real thing, enchantingly played by both musicians.
