These recordings are from the same sessions that produced My Favorite Things, released in 1961. This is one of Coltrane's least known albums, partly because it is a pure blues album and partly because it was released at the end of his collaboration with Atlantic Records.

McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jones and Steve Davis can be heard on Plays The Blues. It is the beginning of his work with Tyner and Jones in the form of a quartet. For this reason alone, this recording is important. Although this album is called Plays The Blues, this is by no means the only blues Coltrane plays. There are blues elements, moods and feelings in all of his best-known recordings. When you listen to "Slowtrane", "Blue Train", "Bessie's Blues" and others, you can't help but hear the blues vibe, writes AllAboutJazz.

The six original tracks are fantastic and have the same blues vibe. They hit the listener right in the heart and soul and never let go. All six are great, but "Blues To Bechet", "Mr. Day", "Mr. Knight" and "Blues To Elvin" are absolute classics.
