Lehár's melancholy master operetta"Always smile and always be happy, always be content, no matter what happens, smile despite your worries and a thousand pains," sings Prince Sou-Chong, establishing the melancholy keynote of Franz Lehár's The Land of Smiles - How unusual for an operetta, and there is even a tragic endingFor the new production of Lehár's masterpiece, world-class tenor Piotr Beczała returned to Zurich Opera House as Sou-Chong. He has an equal partner in Julia Kleiter, who plays the role of Lisa. Fabio Luisi and Andreas Homoki were responsible for this production and proceed with the care that the genre of operetta demands.Director Homoki moved the action to a 1920s Parisian variété theater, true to the style, with show staircase and heavy curtains. To emphasize the operatic elements, he condensed the piece, eliminated several supporting roles and shortened the dialogue, while Fabio Luisi was able to bring his cumulative expertise as a conductor of stage works to bear. This recording from the Zurich Opera House in June 2017 makes an important contribution to the sustained rediscovery of well-known operetta classics.
