Episode 13 of the Haydn2032 project on ALPHA CLASSICS sheds light on Haydn's special approach to the horn with Symphonies Nos. 31, 48 and 59. From around 1765, the court orchestra of the Eszterhazys had up to four excellent horn players, whom Haydn provided with exorbitantly demanding parts in several works. Whether as required virtuosos or trumpet substitutes, the up to four horns sound incredibly majestic here, and the musicians of Il Giardino Armonico play the three pieces in their characteristically impetuous style under the fiery direction of Giovanni Antonini.
