Rudolf Kempe (1910 - 1976) established perhaps the greatest international career of all German conductors since the 1950s. He succeeded Joseph Keilberth as head of the Staatskapelle in Dresden, conducted acclaimed performances in Bayreuth, London and New York, and made award-winning recordings with the two top European orchestras, the Vienna and the Berlin Philharmonics. The ten CDs in this collection convey an impression of the musical legacy of this extraordinary musician and gentleman. Despite his overall versatility, Kempe was considered a particular advocate of those German and Austrian composers, who in opera and concertos are generally associated with the term "Romanticism", at least in regards to the majority of their works. Schubert, Schumann, Mendelssohn and also Weber and Humperdinck belong to this group, as well as Wagner, Brahms, Beethoven, Mahler, Strauss and Bruckner. All of the above are represented in this comprehensive collection with exquisite studio and live recordings.
