Probably all composers - and later, of course, the performers - of nocturnes for piano were aware that they had to make their instrument "sing" here, distinguishing a lyrical "voice" from a supporting accompaniment. For the eminent British pianist Stephen Hough, the Nocturnes of the arch-Romantic Chopin are even the best operatic arias ever composed. This attitude is then also the key to his all-around convincing, because intensely lyrical interpretation on HYPERION, which in a way turns these piano pieces into perfect masterpieces of bel canto.
