Wagner's masterpiece in a top production from BerlinThis new production of Wagner's last opera, his mythical masterpiece Parsifal, caused a worldwide sensation after its premiere in Berlin. Both musical performance and staging were recognized as outstanding. The cast is drenched with stars, starting in the orchestra pit of the Berlin State Opera with its music director Daniel Barenboim, and including singers with modern Wagnerian credentials such as René Pape, Matthias Hölle and Anja Kampe.The production by star director Dmitri Tcherniakov bristles with special effects, shifts the action to a war zone, and features references to world religions as well as esoteric moments. It also attracts attention with many provocations and, last but not least, creates an enormous scenic tension that reinterprets Wagner's Parsifal and makes it seem burningly topical.
