Christian Tetzlaff (violin), Jouko Laivuori, Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Nicholas Collon
With this new album conducted by Nicholas Collon, Ondine continues its award-winning series of orchestral works by Witold Lutosławski (1913-1994) together with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra. The series has received multiple awards, including a GRAMMY nomination, a BBC Music Magazine Awards nomination, and several Recording of the Month awards and nominations for Best Recordings of the Year. This album includes the composer's early hit, his folk masterpiece Concerto for Orchestra, which is one of his most performed compositions. The album also includes Partita for Violin and Orchestra (with Christian Tetzlaff as soloist), a virtuosic five-movement work that rivals a violin concerto in its orchestral version. The rarity of the album is Lutosławski's Novelette from 1979, which, though fragmentary, already hints at the ideas of his Third Symphony.
This compelling release from conductor Nicholas Collon and the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra makes clear the evolutionary exuberance of Lutosławski’s creative development.
Excellent playing from the FRSO and unexceptionally fine sound make these latter performances the equal of any predecessor.
