Music in motionTwo ballets by Roland Petit show the full range of this "most French of French choreographers". Pushkin's story The Queen of Spades, the model for Tchaikovsky's opera of the same name, formed the basis for a ballet, also set to music by Tchaikovsky. However, adapting the opera to dance proved to be unfeasible, whereas the Pathétique, Tchaikovsky's last symphony, was the ideal musical medium for Petit's dance version of Pushkin's novella.. As absolute music, Webern's Passacaglia for orchestra was a completely different challenge for Roland Petit. Bach's cello suites, the "bible of cellists", represented a comparable challenge for the Swiss choreographer Heinz Spoerli, who was also trained as a cellist and brought these pieces to the stage with the Zurich Ballet.
