The Spanish-Dutch pianist Albert Cano Smit, who was born in Geneva, won the Naumburg Competition (which has been organized by the Walter W. Naumburg Foundation in New York since 1925) in 2017. At the age of nine, he joined the boys' choir of the Catalan monastery of Montserrat. He studied at the Juillard School in New York. His mentors include Richard Goode, Jean-Yves Thibaudet and Stephen Hough. He says of Bach's Art of Fugue: "I remember hearing the opening notes for the first time and being captivated by the feeling that a whole universe was revealing itself. Without immediately grasping the complexity, I was gripped by the music, and I think every listener can be."
