Paavo Järvi and the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich present the second volume of their complete recording of Mahler's symphonies with the First Symphony, which is called "Titan" in reference to the novel of the same name by the poet Jean-Paul, whom Mahler greatly admired. Although he gave up this title three years after the symphony's premiere in 1893, the symphony, like many of Mahler's works, "has a clearly programmatic character", according to Paavo Järvi: "Mahler was a composer who was really able to explore the inner world of man and ask what is going on inside us."
