Brahms was only 20 years old when his piano music made such an impression on Robert Schumann that he advised him to compose works for symphonic orchestra. Thus, as a sketch for a first symphony, the Sonata for Two Pianos was written, which in turn later gave rise to the first piano concerto. Brahms' publisher demanded a version for piano four hands. A friend of the composer, Theodor Kirchner, used this as a model for a version for eight hands on two pianos. The development of a corresponding version of the 2nd Piano Concerto, which Paul Juon prepared, was similar. Analogous to their award-winning recording of Franz Liszt's symphonic poems, Vernet and Meckler decided to replace the second piano for this recording with the Cavaillé-Coll organ of Angers Cathedral - with a sonically fascinating result.
