One of the most widely performed works inthe violinist’s oeuvre, Tchaikovsky’s ViolinConcerto has been the subject of many arelease over the years. Here, ratherrefreshingly, it is joined by a host of otherorchestral works written for the instrument:the quiet Sérénade mélancolique, createdfor the esteemed Hungarian violinistLeopold Auer and composed soon after thePiano Concerto No.1 in B minor; the Valsescherzo,a charming divertissement with agypsy flavour and strong rhythmic pulse –not to be confused with the much morefamous version for solo piano; and finallySouvenir d’un lieu cher, whose middlemovement was originally intended as theslow movement of the Concerto and whichwas later re?orchestrated by Glazunov out ofthe lesser known version for violin andpiano.Interpreting these works is internationallyrenowned Ilya Grubert, winner of theTchaikovsky Competition back in 1978 anddescribed as “a musician of exceptionaltalent, a violinist in the tradition of the greatRussian virtuosos, possessed of a clearunwavering tone and an extraordinarytechnique.” (New York Times). He issupported by an all?Russian cast: theMoscow Philharmonic Orchestra directed byVassily Sinaisky – now Conductor inResidence at the Bolshoi Theatre.
