Albert Hermann Dietrich is best known for his association with the Schumanns and his friendship with Brahms, but as this recording shows, his contribution to the artistic activities of this circle went beyond promoting their works as music director at the small grand ducal court in Oldenburg. The Symphony in D minor is strongly related to Brahms and was one of the most frequently performed new symphonies of its time, while the Violin Concerto impresses with its originality and variety of orchestral colors and has earned a place in the concert repertoire.
