Louis XIV not only had a reputation as an excellent dancer, he was also active as a musician. Under the educational influence of his mother, Anne of Austria, the young Louis learned to play the lute and later the guitar. This instrument, once reserved for commoners, became a symbol of royal refinement. This enthusiasm for music was not only for entertainment, but also had political purposes: both the court and the people were to be impressed and a harmonious relationship between French, Italian and Spanish culture was to be established. Like a new King David, monarch and musician par excellence, the Sun King created the image of an Apollonian ruler who mastered the arts as well as power. Together with a host of other great musicians, Léa Masson reveals this forgotten facet of the guitar king!
