Furtwängler was most famous for his interpretations of the works of Beethoven, Brahms, Bruckner and Wagner; Schumann was not so much "on his menu." This makes these rare recordings all the more interesting; the 4th Symphony with the Berlin Philharmonic on May 14, 1953 and the 1st Symphony with the Vienna Philharmonic on October 29, 1951. The booklet offers two never-before-published photos of the conductor; they show him at the podium in front of the Berlin Philharmonic at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa on Jan. 20, 1941.
