Cupertinos open a new chapter in their ground-breaking, multi-year exploration of the hidden treasures of Portuguese Renaissance polyphony. "Hidden" is the operative word here: much of this music was destroyed in the devastating Lisbon earthquake of 1755, with the 1649 catalog of King John IV's music library suggesting that we have so far only scratched the surface of what has been lost. For three decades, the composer Francisco Garro directed the renowned Royal Chapel in Lisbon and published important choral books, from which the present masses and motets have now been reassembled.
