Rodolfo Ritter's repertoire includes many well-known and lesser-known composers, but he has specialized in the piano music of Ponce. in 2013, he recorded the two piano concertos (for Sterling) as well as several solo pieces. Now he embarks on a new adventure for Piano Classics that should win new friends everywhere for an idiom that is full of charm and optimism, essentially romantic in character and piquantly colored by the composer's Mexican heritage. Mexico's political revolution from 1910 to 1917 was followed by a social and cultural revolution, when a once largely rural nation became predominantly urban within a few years. Manuel Ponce, born in 1882, in some ways embodied the outward-looking spirit of this revolution, as he was the country's first internationally renowned composer of European art music ("classical" music), and yet he evoked a romanticized past in the nostalgic language of this music. This tension is explored by Rodolfo Ritter, who embarks on a multi-volume journey through Ponce's piano works - only the second pianist ever to do so on record.
