Who doesn't know it - Tchaikovsky's famous ballet "The Nutcracker" based on the story by E. T. A. Hoffmann. In 2011, a new version of the version originally performed in 1892 at the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg came to the stage at the Amsterdam Music Theater. At the time, the play was cancelled after only 14 performances. Today, however, it enjoys great popularity - and not only at Christmas time. The two choreographers Wayne Eagling and Toer van Schayk dedicated themselves to this ballet and created a new production with "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King", which already had its premiere in 1996 and was performed again with the Dutch National Ballet in Amsterdam in 2011. Eagling and van Schayk moved the action to Amsterdam of the year 1810, replacing the usual Christmas holiday with the traditional Dutch celebration on Sinterklaas evening.
