To mark the 150th anniversary of Arnold Schoenberg’s birth, the Berliner Philharmoniker have dedicated an edition to the composer in which they present five key works from all of his stylistic periods under the direction of chief conductor Kirill Petrenko.
The lovers’ dialogue in Verklärte Nacht is characterised by turbulent passion, the free-tonal Chamber Symphony by sparkling humour. In the Variations for Orchestra, Op. 31, composed using the twelve-tone technique, each variation has its own individual character. Patricia Kopatchinskaja is the soloist in the dazzling Violin Concerto. In Die Jakobsleiter, a particularly personal work, Schoenberg also succeeds in creating a pioneering spatial sound.
In addition to the recordings on 3 CDs and a Blu-ray, the box set, designed by American artist Peter Halley, contains a comprehensive accompanying book with in-depth articles.
