Karol Szymanowski is considered Poland's greatest composer after Chopin. A contemporary of Bartók, Stravinsky, Scriabin and Ravel, his early works are in the style of late Romanticism and are reminiscent of Strauss, Reger and Rimsky-Korsakov. He later developed an impressionistic, oriental and partly atonal style, which he fused with the folk music of his home country. His fourth and final symphony is a modern interpretation of the Sinfonia concertante with a striking piano part, here with the Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra under Marin Alsop and pianist Szymon Nehring. Ten mazurkas for piano complete the program.
