The east Asian philosophy of Taoism is central to Isang Yuns output. The 100-plus works he composed in Europe combine national traditions with international modernity. Yun discovered his individual sound in Europe by calling on music of the Chinese-Korean court. His works are also characterised by the flexible, lively spirit of his homeland's traditional music and its flowing transition from the spirit of Taoism. Chamber music occupies an important part in Yuns oeuvre. In these works he not only experimented with diverse and unusual combinations of instruments, but also continued to compose in traditional classical genres.
