  • Any attempt to outline all the musical events of the 20th century (no matter how concise) would - to put it mildly - require a very general approach to the subject. The succession of artistic movements, from modern music to new music to the avant-garde, took place regardless of a constant evolutionary process. The characteristics (technical, expressive, socially relevant) of each movement were often exhausted in a process of self-destruction or took on an exaggerated predominance compared to the actual importance of their message.

Some of these movements were essentially based solely on a strong element of musical personalism, associated with composers as brilliant as they were accomplished, who dominated the organizational systems that facilitated the dissemination and production of their works. The instrumentalists, who had meanwhile developed into performers of rare dexterity, found that the composers of the last century were happy to make them "co-authors" and "decipherers" of new musical codes. This in turn increased personalism exponentially and enabled even more complex perspectives. The interest in the new technical possibilities and modes of action of the instruments became almost obsessive, so that the purely musical value of the text was marginalized.

Yet alongside the music composed (or otherwise produced) in the heyday of official serialism, we find masterpieces that are often difficult to find among a multitude of other, practically indistinguishable works. And undeniably, there were fierce attacks on those who continued to compose in a language that the dictionaries described - not without a touch of condescension - as "a language faithful to tradition but open to new experiences".

Today, a good half century later, critics, musicologists and instrumentalists have finally recognized that, in addition to New Music and the avant-garde, other important composers maintained a tradition that could be more than just self-referential. In fact, their tradition was so solid (from a technical point of view) that it could perfectly accommodate the demands of a society that was undergoing rapid - often very rapid - change.

The composers represented on this recording - some well-known, others unknown to most listeners - belong to a group of artists who may well be considered part of the "other 20th century": a musical 20th century that was often denied attention, consideration and recognition, even though its most important representatives were well aware of and shared the artistic values of the time.

    Further information:
    - Recorded in Rome in January 2010
    - The English-language booklet contains liner notes by the flautist and profiles of both artists.

    - The 20th century witnessed an immense and revolutionary development of musical styles and language, which in some cases led to a radical departure from the basic musical traditions. This CD presents works for flute and piano by composers who have remained true to their own personal musical language, expressing only their own sense of beauty, emotion and aesthetics, without following current trends or theories.

    - The following composers are presented: Rhené Baton, Francis Poulenc, Albert Roussel, Darius Milhaud, Ernst Krenek, Paul Höffer, Samuel Barber, Ferenc Farkas, Franco Margola, Giuseppe Mulè, Jean Michel Damase, Luciano Michelini: a very diverse selection of accessible, highly entertaining music.

    - Gian-Luca Petrucci was first flautist in several of Italy's best orchestras. He was a professor at the Santa Cecilia Conservatory in Rome. As a scholar, he has published monographs on various (Italian) composers: Mercadante, Briccialdi, Gazzelloni, de Lorenzo and Mozart. His previous recordings for Brilliant Classics include works by Frederick the Great, Böhm and Mercadante.
