Opera, which overwhelmingly dominated Italian music from the mid-19th century at the latest, also left its mark on instrumental music. Initially, efforts were made to imitate the songfulness of the arias, but toward the end of the century many Italian composers consciously distanced themselves from the cantabile nature of opera. From this a national style developed, which on the one hand took up the currents and tendencies of art music in Europe, but on the other hand always added its own nuance, which dealt - directly or indirectly, imitating or distancing - with the opera. With the departure from traditional forms and sounds, Italian instrumental music, above all piano music, emancipated itself and thus took on a progressive role again

The 20th Century Italian Piano Music box set traces the development of Italian piano music on 20 CDs. It includes Romantic works by Francesco Cilea (1866-1950), known today mainly as an opera composer, and Roffredo Caetani (1871-1961), a godson (not only in the religious sense) of Franz Liszt, as well as compositions of the late Romantic period influenced by Wagner by Giuseppe Martucci (1856-1909) and Ferruccio Busoni (1866-1924)

At the heart of the collection are recordings of the piano works of the Generazione dell'ottanta: Alfredo Casella (1883-1947), Gian Francesco Malipiero (1882-1973), Ildebrando Pizzetti (1880-1968), and Ottorino Respighi (1879-1936). They combined old, primarily Italian compositional techniques with the tonal language of modernism. In addition, there are the works of the Jewish composers Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco (1895-1968), Guido Alberto Fano (1875-1961), and Leone Sinigaglia (1868-1944), who were outlawed by the fascists, and which are individual in every respect

The new music of Italy of the post-war era, with works by Luigi Dallapiccola (1904-1975) and Niccolò Castiglioni (1932-1996), is not left out, nor is the cinematically influenced style of Nino Rota (1911-1979). The postmodernism of Ludovico Einaudi (*1955) closes the circle of 20th century Italian piano music.
