The viol consort was cultivated in England during the Elizabethan and Stuart periods and, after the years under Cromwell, until Purcell's time. Although it had no influence on other European countries, it made an important and original contribution to the polyphonic music of the time. The repertoire, consisting largely of fantasias, conveys a tonal and social ideal of unity and harmony, but also expresses the confusion of a time of disorder and fear ("distracted tymes"), which was characterized by political, religious and philosophical upheaval. The Ricercar Consort under Philippe Pierlot presents pieces by Tomkins, Bull, Laws and others.
