the players have an excellent sense of spontaneity… They listen acutely, and respond sensitively to Mendelssohn’s vivid sense of string colour…The soloists, both outstanding, provide a total contrast, and there the violinist, Rainer Kussmaul, is if anything even more impressive than Andreas Staier, for many years the harpsichordist of Concerto Koln and here the director as well as soloist
These early pieces demand strong and committed performances, more gritty than pretty, to make their effect, and Concerto Köln supplies them
