Pavel Kolesnikov, Samson Tsoy
For its very first disc with harmonia mundi, the duo formed by Pavel Kolesnikov and Samson Tsoy offers us three closely related works: Schubert’s celebrated Fantasy, his Divertissement à la hongroise, full of contrasts between bursts of energy and enigmatic mists, and Leonid Desyatnikov’s Trompe-l’œil, written specifically ‘to echo’ the Fantasy. An intriguing hall of mirrors.
Franz Schubert (1797-1828), Leonid Desyatnikov (b. 1955)
In this recording the Schubert works emerge as absolutely magical. The Divertissement elicits a sumptuous softness, while the Fantasie creates the impression of vast and intensely dramatic landscapes.
Kolesnikov and Tsoy’s approach to the piece is so immersive, as well as deeply artistic, that the work is immediately appealing, yet its interest grows in subsequent hearings.
It should be said upfront that Kolesnikov and Tsoy share a unity of musical intent, perfectly matched finesse and nuance, and beautifully coordinated pianistic resources that make their hand-in-glove ensemble a joy to experience.
