Melism Records continues its exploration of the output of the Greek composer Yannis Andreou Papaïoannou (1910-1989) with this offering, conducted by Byron Fidetzis, of some of his highly original orchestral works. Three “symphonic impressions”, Samothrace (1948), Pygmalion (1950) and the earlier Forest Poem (1942), frame Vasilis Arvanitis, an enormous and alluring “symphonic legend” dating from 1945 and inspired by forms previously deployed by Berlioz, Liszt and Strauss. After studying orchestration with Emilios Riadis he perfected his art at the feet of Arthur Honegger, during the 1940s. While in his thirties, Papaïoannou developed a language which at times subtly
combines the expressionist flavours of northern Europe with the heady perfumes of Russian futurism and manifold influences taken from modern French impressionism. H later joined more modernistic tendencies and the European avant garde.
