Georg Philipp Telemann taught himself to play the recorder as a child and had a special preference for the instrument throughout his life. He even created a new hybrid form for it, the "Suite auf Concertenart", which combines virtuosity with baroque dances. Erik Bosgraaf, one of the best recorder players in the world, has recorded the two suites in A minor and E flat major with his Ensemble Cordevento as the start of a small Telemann series. They are complemented by the two alto recorder concertos in C major and F major. These are rare (and rarely recorded) examples of the concerto genre that the otherwise busy Magdeburg composer shied away from.
