The new production of Purcell's "The Fairy Queen", which the English National Opera (ENO) staged in 1995, was enthusiastically received by audiences and the specialist press alike. Under the musical direction of Nicholas Kok, the ENO orchestra played baroque music that was as clear and transparent as it was emotionally stirring. In addition to outstanding performers in the danced roles, such as Puck (Simon Rice) and the Indian boy (Arthur Pita), this new production featured a whole armada of outstanding singers, the like of which is rarely seen on an opera stage in the field of baroque music -- including Yvonne Kenny as Titania, Thomas Randle as Oberon and Richard Van Allan as King Theseus.Jonathan Best's comic portrayal of the drunken poet was loved by audiences and particularly praised by the press, and singers such as Michael Chance, Mary Hegarthy, Janis Kelly, Marc Le Brocq and Christopher Ross contributed their artistry to an extraordinary musical theater event, which can now be experienced on Blu-ray for the first time.
