Jali Nyama Suso (1925-1991) was one of the most famous and respected kora players not only in his native Gambia. Depending on the occasion, Nyama Suso alias Jaliyaa acted as singer and player or as oral historiographer and laudator. The Kora is a 21-string West African bar harp plucked with both hands, which is also classified as a harp lute. The recordings made in Gambia in 1970 and in the USA in 1972 were the first solo recordings with this instrument ever. In traditional music, the kora has the task of accompanying singing, either by the singer himself or by a kora player who takes over this part.
