Alessandro Stradella Consort, Estévan Velardi
Alessandro Scarlatti (1660?1725) is one of the most important composers of the Italian Baroque and the founder of the Neapolitan School. His immense output includes instrumental music but above all an enormous amount of vocal music, both sacred and profane.
His Oratorio “Il Dolore di Maria Vergine” dates from 1717, Scarlatti’s maturity, and may be considered to be his best creation in this genre. The music is of intense drama, a deeply felt sorrow and passion permeates the whole work, getting to the heart of the essential religious meaning of the spiritual and transcendent value of Christ’s sacrifice for mankind.
Beautiful and highly expressive performance by Italian vocal soloists, the Alessandro Stradella Consort, conducted by Estévan Velardi, musician and scholar, and pioneer in the revival of Alessandro Scarlatti.
Extensive liner notes written by a musicologist are included in the booklet.
