Vytautas Bacevičius' life was marked by exile and migration during the turbulent first half of the 20th century, but his impressive catalog testifies to a remarkable creative spirit unaffected by adversity. The youthful Piano Concertos Nos. 1 and 2, which he composed while studying in Paris, reflect Bacevičius' longing for his Lithuanian homeland, as they use unselfconscious and spirited folk melodies that contribute to their light and celebratory character. The Third Symphony, written not long after his arrival in the United States in 1944, expresses an early optimism for the composer's new homeland with its energetic, positive and confident tone, culminating in a quotation from The Stars and Stripes Forever.
