Gunar Letzbor and his ensemble Ars Antiqua Austria present two magnificent masterpieces from two major centers of Baroque Catholic church music north of the Alps—Biber’s multi-choir Vespers for 32 voices, which hails from Salzburg, impressively illustrates the significance of Salzburg Cathedral. Benedikt Anton Aufschnaiter was Kapellmeister at Passau Cathedral, and his magnificent festive Mass, “Missa ‘Lætamur in ea’,” is heard here in its world premiere recording.
The lineup of the Ars Antiqua Austria ensemble is modeled after that of the Salzburg Cathedral Choir during Biber’s time, and Letzbor complements the outstanding soloists with the soprano and alto voices of the St. Florian Boys’ Choir.
This allows Biber’s Vespers in particular to shine in magnificent Baroque splendor without ever seeming overloaded—the various vocal choirs, trumpets with timpani, cornets, and strings sound very clear and balanced, allowing the listener to follow the text and the musical subtleties perfectly.
