An insightful juxtaposition of the two giants of piano playing that frame the Romantic era, from a pianist with a growing international reputation. Latvian pianist Georgijs Osokins recorded the works for Piano Classics between 2016 and 2018, and they met with an enthusiastic critical response on their first release. In Gramophone, Jeremy Nicholas praised the "powerful and clearly articulated interpretation" of Rachmaninov's Variations on a Theme of Chopin, while the two transcriptions were "further evidence of Osokins' stylistic identification with Rachmaninov's idiom". The Chopin album was created shortly after Osokins placed among the medal winners at the 2015 Chopin Competition in Warsaw, where he divided opinion with his interpretations, which many considered radical. However, the coherence of his thinking is clearly evident in the sequence that traces Chopin's 'late' thinking and piano playing, as it ventures into poetic realms previously unexplored even by him, from the Third Piano Sonata to the visionary Polonaise-Fantaisie. These are works that will continue to challenge and reward the most adventurous minds and musicians of every generation, and with this album Osokins has joined their ranks.
