Oistrakh Quartet, Daniel Austrich, Alexander Buzlov
Contrary to its title, Tchaikovsky's string sextet "Souvenir de Florence," composed in 1890, belongs to the Russian tradition rather than the Italian school. Highly contrasting and intense, it makes incredible demands on performers and constitutes one of the cornerstones of the repertoire. Less than a decade later, Schoenberg composed another masterpiece of the genre that rivals Tchaikovsky's in its power: "Transfigured Night," inspired by Robert Dehmel's poem, takes Romantic expression to the extreme in a black, feverish musical painting.
