Local jazz fans will remember Larance Marable (1929-2012) primarily as the drummer of Charlie Haden's legendary Quartet West from the 1980s and 1990s. When he recorded his only album as a bandleader in 1956 as Lawrence Marable, he was considered one of the most sought-after drummers on the West Coast jazz scene in Los Angeles. Marable gave the album the title "Tenorman" because it introduced the then relatively unknown young Texan tenor saxophonist James Clay. In addition to four well-known standards, the quartet can be heard here with three compositions by its pianist Sonny Clark, who was to make his big breakthrough a short time later with hard bop albums such as "Dial 'S' for Sonny", "Sonny's Crib" and "Cool Struttin'" on Blue Note.
