Composed between 2006 and 2010, the Nanosonatas by Frederic Rzewski (1938-2021) are a cycle of 56 short piano pieces. Created after his extensive work The Road, these sonatas focus instead on conciseness, restraint and the poetry of the unfinished. Each Nanosonata offers a glimpse, but despite their brevity, the individual pieces are astonishingly diverse: echoes of Scarlatti, Schumann, Shostakovich, folk tunes, protest songs and even boxing movements contribute to a lively and surprising sound world.
