The St. Petersburg pianist Grigory Sokolov’s fame was secured almost fifty years ago following his victory at the 3rd Int’l Tchaikovsky Competition in 1966. Mr. Sokolov is a pianist of broad creative range, having had classical, romantic and modern music in his repertoire. However, he is better known as an interpreter of Bach’s works, where his combination of intellectual depth and rational, constructive mastery with extreme emotional expression is much admired. This Melodiya LP features recordings of Partita No.2 in c and English Suite No.2 in a, made at Sokolov’s recitals in 1982 and 1988.
