Recorded within two days in San Francisco in 1959, "Alone in San Francisco" shows Thelonious Monk in a rare, unconstrained form - solo, without an audience and without an ensemble. With nowhere to hide, Monk (unsurprisingly) rose to the occasion and created one of the most intimate documents of his career.
The album offers a mixture of standards and original compositions. It opens with Monk's buoyant, virtuosic classic "Blue Monk", arguably his most recorded work, before moving into the quirky elegance of "Ruby, My Dear". Elsewhere, two takes of the intriguingly titled "There's Danger in Your Eyes, Cherie" highlight Monk's improvisational instincts, oscillating between buoyant meditation and playful abstraction.
This reissue of the album is released as part of the Original Jazz Classics Series on 180-gram vinyl, pressed by RTI, with fully analog mastering from the original tapes at Cohearent Audio and a tip-on sleeve that faithfully recreates the original artwork.
