LOU RAWLS died on January 6 of this year at the age of 72."The Best Of Lou Rawls: The Capitol Jazz & Blues Sessions" is therefore also a musical obituary that once again presents the gifted black singer in all his vocal intensity and stylistic imposingness. This album contains a total of 17 recordings from his Capitol years (1962-1970) as well as a previously unreleased three-song session with the Curtis Amy Sextet from 1963. In a wide variety of line-ups, LOU RAWLS oscillates easily between gospel ("Motherless Child"), swing ("Nobody Loves Me") and blues ("Tobacco Road") and interprets songs by Sam Cooke ("Somebody Have Mercy") and Randy Newman ("Let's Burn Down The Cornfield") with a class that still characterized him many years later during his time at Blue Note.
