Josef Suk: "To the memory of Antonín Dvorák and his daughter, my wife Ottilie"The death of his father-in-law Antonín Dvorák inspired Suk to compose his Asrael Symphony. In the image of the Mohammedan and Jewish demon Asrael, who as an angel of death leads the souls of the deceased to paradise, he thus commemorated the composer, who meant a great deal to him. A short time later, his wife died, and Suk also processed this stroke of fate in his symphony as a very personal reflection on death. With this work, situated between late Romanticism and Impressionism, Suk achieved an immensely dense symphonic effect, comparable to that of Gustav Mahler's symphonies. This new recording is one of the few recordings of Josef Suk's rarely performed symphony, with which the composer dealt with personal strokes of fate with a "Requiem," sensitively and delicately captured in this recording. This production marks the beginning of a promising collaboration between the Essen Philharmonic and OehmsClassics. Meyerbeer's opera Le prophète is already planned for 2018.
Tomas Netopil understands the pace of Asrael and seizes the ample dramatic opportunities with relish. The orchestral detail, particularly from the woodwind, is impressive…there is much to enjoy in this performance
