Blacher: Blues - Espagnola - Rumba philharmonie
Françaix: Aubade (Morning music) for 12 Cello soloists
Funck: Suite in D major from Stricturae Viola di Gambicae
Klengel: Hymnus for 12 Cellos, Op. 57This collection of original pieces and arrangements is performed by the legendary ‘12 Cellists of the Berlin Philharmonic’. It was first released in 1975, and includes music by Funck, Klengel, Blacher, and Françaix. The 12 Cellists of the Berlin Philharmonic are probably the most unusual chamber music ensemble in the world. The fact that the lower string players of an orchestra should form themselves into an independent ensemble is unique, and it is even more impressive that the ensemble has notched up success after success over a period of nearly 40 years, nationally and internationally. This particular collection gives an insight into their early years, and features the programme of the Berlin Festwochen concert which the group gave in the National Gallery on 30th September 1975.
