This recording is the testimony of a close collaboration between a composer and a pianist. The composer Thomas Adès is also a pianist and conductor (on this album he takes on all three roles), his music has taken Kirill Gerstein on a profound journey of discovery. He got to know Adès' music as a completely enthusiastic listener of the earliest CD recordings with works by Adès, recorded by the composer himself. Since 2012, however, Gerstein has been a regular active collaborator, partner and inspirer of new works for his instrument, such as the Berceuse, which can be heard on this album between the concert paraphrase of "Powder Her Face" for two pianos and the Mazurkas for solo piano. The album concludes In Seven Days, the piece that led to the first collaboration between Gerstein and Adès, a "symphony about the myth of creation with an obbligato piano part" as Gerstein describes it.
