Ottorino Respighi’s ‘mystery in three episodes’, MariaEgiziaca, started out as a concert triptych. Its intenselydramatic and at times symphonic qualities give it acharacter somewhere between an oratorio and anopera. Based on the life of Saint Mary of Egypt, thearchaic story of Maria egiziaca revolves around faith seenthrough its various characters, with Maria’s journey fromprostitution to sainthood conveyed as an expressive andeloquently immediate musical fresco. This Teatro LaFenice production of Respighi’s profoundly moving anddeeply sensuous stage work was critically acclaimed.
