The engineer Friedrich Trautwein (1888-1956), lecturer in musical acoustics at the Staatliche Musikhochschule Berlin, developed the trautonium together with Paul Hindemith, which was first demonstrated at the "Neue Musik Berlin 1930" festival with Hindemith's music. The early forerunner of the synthesizer, which is not played via a keyboard but via two string manuals, underwent several metamorphoses and an astonishing career, culminating in Oskar Sala's music for the Hitchcock film "The Birds". Munich-based Peter Pichler, a crossover artist, is one of the few musicians to have mastered the trautonium with virtuosity.
