Aram Khachaturian devoted himself to ballet music and created two masterpieces in this genre - Spartacus and Gayaneh. The ballets are characterized by an indelible thematic beauty, of which the "Adagio of Spartacus and Phrygia" is a perfect example, are symphonically conceived and, in the case of Gayaneh, are characterized by the use of leitmotifs. The Masquerade Suite is a contrasting theatrical score. These sensitive piano arrangements preserve the essence of his music by retaining the texture and clarity of the original orchestral scores. Mikael Ayrapetyan is the world's leading exponent of Armenian piano music, and his grand piano recordings of music from his homeland have won worldwide admiration.
