The music on this album places high demands on the performers and was composed by two of the greatest gambists in music history: Marin Marais and Antoine Forqueray. Marais "played like an angel, Forqueray like the devil", commented the contemporary Hubert Le Blanc. Forqueray's music was also criticized for being "so difficult that only he and his son (Jean Baptist) can play it", as the Mercure de France wrote in 1738. Gambist Johanna Rose and harpsichordist Javier Nuñez continue their exploration of the world of music for viola da gamba.
