The piano concertos by Schumann and Grieg, which are often played together in concerts and on recordings, seem to depict the entire spectrum of Romantic expression, from confession to triumph. This iconic repertoire, where pianist Reed Tetzloff and Sir John Eliot Gardiner met, still holds a few surprises. The decision to record a rarely heard interim version of the Schumann concerto offers an insight into the development of the work and sheds new light on Schumann's compositional process as well as his relationship with Clara, his true artistic collaborator.
Soloist and conductor, driven by a shared desire to challenge and surprise, reveal here an undeniable artistic affinity through a fresh and deeply committed interpretation.
