Rossini's frivolous masterpiece in a fresh production from Paris
Gioachino Rossini was invited to Paris in 1824 to breathe new life into French opera and bring with him influences from Italy. One of the most exciting innovations of the time, which Rossini helped to establish, was the introduction of a new style of comic opera.
Rossini drew the thoroughly bawdy plot of his play Le Comte Ory from a play of the vaudeville theaters of the time, which were known and infamous for their frivolous liberality
Despite its risqué subject, the premiere was a huge triumph; the opera was performed 60 times in its first year alone, and the piece remained in the Paris Opera repertory for more than 20 years. Le Comte Ory was to remain Rossini's last comic opera, and after a period of widespread oblivion, the work is enjoying increasing popularity again today.
